Dogecoin is an ERC20 token that started in 2013 as a joke – a riff on the “Doge” internet meme. Like Bitcoin, it can be mined and traded, and used to make purchases. It quickly gained steam and attracted a devoted online community that turned the Doge into a $2 billion powerhouse cryptocurrency when it exploded in January, before falling to a current valuation of roughly $380 million.

The parody project went on to fuel the Colorado-based Dogecoin Foundation which raised $50,000 in January 2014 to help send the Jamaican bobsled team to the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and $30,000 to help Kenyans build water wells, among other philanthropic efforts.

From laughing stock to multi-million dollar digital currency, Dogecoin made it clear that cryptos count and that the water crisis in Kenya is no joke.
