Major City in Brazil to Begin Accepting Bitcoin for Public Transportation

Commuters in one of Brazil’s most populous cities could soon be paying their bus fares in Bitcoin.

Fortaleza, the fifth-biggest Brazilian city with 2.64 million inhabitants, will let its residents pay for bus rides with frequent flier miles and/or Bitcoin by the end of 2019, according to local news outlet O Povo.

Says Carlos Robério Sampaio, chief financial officer of Cootraps, Fortaleza’s public transit system,

“This is a way of reducing bureaucracy, even bringing more users into transport. We expect a larger flow of people. We will make it easier for users.”

According to Cootraps, transit riders will be able to pay in BTC using smartphones and a QR code to confirm the trip.
