Facebook Crypto Clues: Tech Giant Seeks Blockchain Expert With Public Policy and Crypto Experience
Social media giant Facebook is looking for a Public Policy Manager for Blockchain. The job listing, posted on Facebook and LinkedIn, highlights the company’s mission to help empower people to build community by connecting billions of users around the world. Founded in February 2004, the 14-year-old tech titan says, “We’re just getting started.”
The listing reads,
“Facebook seeks a Public Policy Manager for our new Blockchain initiative to lead policy development for the global public policy team. The successful candidate will work closely with and support a cross-functional team working on the new initiative. The ideal candidate will have expertise in emerging blockchain, data protection, digital identity, cryptocurrency, and related policy issues, as well as experience working on technology policy issues generally.”
The role is part of Facebook’s expansion into new technologies.
Facebook appointed former Coinbase board member David Marcus to head its new blockchain team back in May. He is joined by Kevin Weil, Instagram’s former VP of product, to help grow the division. Marcus was previously the head of Facebook’s messaging app Messenger.
Time for a new challenge! After four amazing years leading Messenger, I'm going to setup a small group to explore how to best leverage Blockchain for Facebook. I will miss my fierce Messenger team, but I'm excited about the journey ahead. My full note: https://t.co/nBKAr7vyj9

After serving as a board member at the San Francisco-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase since December 2017, Marcus stepped down earlier this month. In addition to his insights on cryptocurrency, Marcus brings to Facebook top industry knowledge of digital payments as the former president of PayPal.
In a statement to CoinDesk, Marcus remarked about his brief tenure on the board and his impressions of Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong.
“Getting to know Brian, who’s become a friend, and the whole Coinbase leadership team and board has been an immense privilege. I’ve been thoroughly impressed by the talent and execution the team has demonstrated during my tenure, and I wish the team all the success it deserves going forward.”
The new full-time blockchain position will be located at the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California or at Facebook’s office in Washington, DC.
